RoHS is an environmental directive established in Europe and restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
RoHS compliance is a condition for placing a product on the market in EU member states.
Generally called the RoHS Directive, it is short for the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
Since the first version of the RoHS Directive (hereinafter referred to as RoHS 1) was adopted in February 2003, the European Commission held many discussions on the directive and an amended version of the RoHS Directive (hereinafter referred to as RoHS 2) entered into force in July 2011.
Adopting the CE marking system, RoHS 2 requires manufacturers to attach the CE mark on products and to create and retain a Declaration of Conformity and technical documentation. In 2015, four substances were newly designated as restricted substances and now there are 10 restricted substances in all.
Adopted or Entered into Force | Number of Restricted Substances | Effective Date of Restriction for Substances | |
---|---|---|---|

Although products of category 8 (medical devices) and category 9 (monitoring and control instruments including industrial monitoring and control instruments) were exempted from restriction in RoHS 1, they are no longer exempted in RoHS 2. Furthermore, a new category was added: category 11 “Other electrical and electronic equipment.”
